Guam is keeping us very busy.
We attended church with the Schulz's. Then has lunch with some of the faculty and staff who also attend this church. It was a nice way to get acquainted with them. The local restaurants all run on "island time." Much like "Jewish time!" Things are about 15 minutes late!
On Monday we didn't have class, so we went around island with a student and his wife. It was very interesting. Guam is only about 30 miles long but some of that is inaccessible. We saw a WWII memorial at Nimitz hill where some of the heaviest battles happened in 1944. This is the area where the US landed to liberate Guam from Japan. It is a very moving site. From there we drove further South and saw the beauty of that area. We visited the site of Magellan's 1522 landing and where the Spanish built Fort Soledad as a stronghold for their ships in passage between Acapulco, Mexico and Manila, Philippines. We also tried to see the sight where the Japanese soldier hid in a cave for 27 years finally coming being discovered in 1972, but it has become a Japanese tourist site and cost $20/person to go it. Instead we drove to a Chinese restaurant and ate a good meal for a lot less. Our hosts for the day learned how to eat with chopsticks. They are from Pohnpei one of the islands that are part of the Federated States of Micronesia.
Tuesday we were back in class. Armin was teaching on spreadsheets. The students, for the most part, caught on. As it was raining, our sightseeing was postponed. We returned back to the house where we worked on lesson plans and watched TV.
Wednesday after class we went to the Chamorro Village with one of the professors and his daughters. It was a fun evening. We ate local food and saw local entertainment. Also, bought a few things to bring home.
